# Are supermarket specials worth it in NZ?

A supermarket special is worth it when it reduces the cost of food your household needs and will use. Compare the price you qualify for with suitable alternatives, then consider the quantity you have to buy. A lower price per item can still mean a bigger shopping bill.

## Does a special ticket mean the lowest price?

The [Commerce Commission](https://www.comcom.govt.nz/consumers/dealing-with-typical-situations/buying-goods-and-services/pricing/)
says shoppers should not assume an advertised discount is the cheapest available price.
A promotional price can become the usual selling price if a
business routinely sells at that price, according to the same guide. The crossed-out price alone is not enough
to judge the offer.

In Marsonya, tap a product to see its available prices at Woolworths, PAK'nSAVE and
New World in one place. You can check an offer without opening each supermarket's
website separately.

Compare matching pack sizes and the price you qualify for. Where a unit price is
displayed, it helps compare different sizes; our
[unit-pricing guide](/learn/unit-pricing-supermarket-nz) explains how.

## What are you agreeing to buy?

An offer may require a particular quantity, eligible products or membership. Read
the conditions on the ticket before adding extra groceries.
[Heart Foundation NZ's shopping guide](https://www.heartfoundation.org.nz/about-us/news/blogs/money-saving-tips-food-shopping)
recommends comparing specials with the regular price and warns that promotions can
encourage purchases beyond what you need.

Source: Marsonya's illustrative example, 15 October 2026. Imagine identical tins of
tomatoes at $2.50 each, or three for $6. If you need all three, the offer costs $1.50
less than buying three individually. If you only need one, buying the deal costs
$3.50 more today than buying that single tin. These are invented prices, not a current
retailer offer.

Illustration: food already at home changes whether buying extra is useful.

That extra food could replace a later purchase. It is useful if your household will
use it and the larger purchase fits today's budget. If there are already enough tins
in the cupboard, the offer may simply bring forward spending you did not need to make.

[Consumer Protection](https://www.consumerprotection.govt.nz/general-help/guide-to-buying-smart/saving-at-the-supermarket-with-unit-prices)
recommends comparing unit prices for multi-pack and single-item offers. The label
helps with price; your household's needs determine how much to buy.

## How can you keep specials within your shopping plan?

[Love Food Hate Waste NZ](https://lovefoodhatewaste.co.nz/reduce-your-waste/reduce-your-waste-plan/)
recommends starting with food already in the pantry, fridge and freezer. A special
can replace something on your list when it suits the same meal. The discount is useful when it lowers the cost of that planned purchase.

Without a shared food record, it is easy to guess what is at home while browsing
specials. Marsonya keeps your [household food records](/pantry-inventory) with your
shopping list. Barcode lookup and camera-read dates reduce typing when recording
food. A quick quantity-use swipe helps keep the record useful as food is used.

Buy Plan calculates an estimated list total from available store prices and groups
purchases by store. You can see whether a changed list fits the budget without adding
up every item yourself. It is an estimate: the retailer confirms final prices, offer
eligibility and any delivery or pickup charges at checkout.

For the wider shop, our [grocery savings guide](/grocery-savings) connects this decision
with store comparisons and the food you still need to buy.

## What else do people ask about supermarket specials?

### Do I need to buy the full multibuy quantity?

To receive a multibuy price, meet the quantity and product conditions on that offer. Buying fewer may mean paying the individual price. Check the offer rather than assuming each item gets the same discount.

### Is a member price always cheaper than another supermarket's price?

No. Membership tells you who qualifies for that price. Another store may offer a suitable item for less. Compare the price you can actually receive.

### Should I skip a special if I already have the food?

Not necessarily. Buying ahead can make sense for food you will use and can afford to buy now. Extra stock is less useful when it duplicates food you are unlikely to finish or takes money from groceries you need more.
